into the trees the book
"The first rough draft of Into The Trees came about when I was seventeen years old, not as an attempt at creating a novel that would sell, but as a means of cleansing the wounds of my troubled adolescent psyche by way of the written word.
I wrote to satiate my mind’s desperate cravings to escape by crafting a fictional world of characters that I could find refuge in. Each sentence was a secret release of all the syllables stuck on every slight of tongue I could never quite form.
The title ‘Into The Trees’ derives from the cautionary idiom of ‘not seeing the forest for the trees’ which has always struck me as a profoundly astute way of describing what it feels like to experience mental illness in
real time".

The book is a psychological thriller similar in genre to The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn or Catcher In The Rye by JD Salinger.
The manuscript was shortlisted for the NZSA Laura Solomon Cuba Press Prize (2025) and is currently under review with publishers. Once available, it will be linked here.

Shine on
Angus Heays left this world tragically far too soon. He was a bright, talented young man who was kind and caring, quick with good advice for anyone who asked for it.
He loved the arts and won accolades as an actor, poet and writer. He was our wise, old soul who was also suffering with his own mental challenges and well being. Our promise to Angus was to publish his novel entitled "Into the Trees" and donate profits to mental health.
Angus's legacy will continue by helping those who are struggling with mental health issues. Visit the donations page
